Final Reflection

I went back and looked at all my work and I have to say that I could not be more proud of how much I have gotten done this semester. I never thought I would put so much effort into something that honestly does not interest me so much. I started out with a simple idea of not liking alarm clocks and it developed into something so much more. The things that stood out to me the most were my elevator pitches. I did my first one very seriously and the second not so much since the first one came out so great. Funniest thing is that one day two girls came up to me and told me they had seen my second elevator pitch and thought it was hilarious. I honestly could have never guessed that would happen. I do not think that I have become more of an entrepreneur over this semester. I cannot really tell you the exact reason for that it is just that I have always had the right mindset and this class did not enhance it much. I do recommend this class to people because it is a good class to take. The assignments are time consuming but they have a purpose and if you do them right you really get something good out of it. I gotta say if you are going to take this class make sure you set up a schedule and look at the assignments at least a week in advance since some of them will actually take that long to complete. Other than that just enjoy the ride!

Venture Concept No. 2

Opportunity:
This opportunity exists because people are now becoming more aware of what is harmful to them. Alarm clocks startle you awake and that is not good for your heart and it is not a pleasant way to start your day. This is a huge window of opportunity because most people do not even realize that there is a need for a substitute product. The window will not be open forever as someone other than me will come along and create a device that makes my product and alarm clocks obsolete. My product applies to nearly everyone, but I see that there might be a problem in convincing people to switch from their reliable alarm clocks to my method.

Innovation:
My product is innovative because it is one of a kind. It is a small pad that slides underneath your mattress. It is controlled through an application on your phone and runs on wireless battery. You simply slide it under your bed and open the application. You can then use the application to set up a specific time in which you want to wake up and adjust the strength of the vibration. After the vibrations go off and you are awake you can then turn off the alarm through the application. I still have to work out my production costs, but I would estimate to sell this product for $50.

Venture concept:
The competitors that I have in this market are old fashioned alarm clocks and smart watches. It is going to be hard to make people try my product instead of relying on alarm clocks. This is something that I have to figure out still but I believe when people try my product they will never want to go back.

I received an overall good feedback from my peers. One person did make me see that although I do not have anyone else creating a product similar to mine, I still have to worry about not being able to get people to switch over to my product and leave alarm clocks behind.

What I decided to change is how aggressive I plan to attack the old concept of alarms. If I am able to make people see that this product is obsolete than they will automatically turn to my product as a substitute.

Your Exit Strategy

I do not plan on running this business of the rest of my life. It is just not something that I see my self doing. I also do not plan on passing the business down to my children. I do not want to work my whole life on something I do not even know if my children will want to continue. I would sell the business and enjoy the money I receive from it. Hopefully enough where with a few good investments I do not have to work an extra day of my life. I chose this because I never received any inheritance from my parents, and I believe it has made me more independent and stronger. I want my children to be the same way. I do not think this choice influence my strategy in building the business.

Reading Reflection No. 3

For this assignment I read about Andrew Carnegie. The man is an entrepreneur if I have ever seen one. He started out working as a telegrapher which is someone who works receiving telegraphs and translates the Morse code into English or any language that the code intended. He then invested his money into railroads. This produced a decent amount of money for Carnegie and it goes to show that even at a young age he knew it was better to invest his money rather than spend it.  He later began selling bonds for corporation in England which gave him enough capital to then opened his own steel company which he called Pittsburgh’s Carnegie Steel Company. This is what made him his fortune after J.P. Morgan bought that company for around three million dollars. Carnegie used this money for the good of society. He is known as one of the biggest philanthropists in history. He donated close to ninety percent of his wealth to charitable organizations and universities.

Celebrating Failure

I am currently studying to be an actuary. Most people do not know what that is exactly, but a short description is that they measure risk. To pursue this career, you are required to take various exams that “certify” that you know a certain amount of information on various topics. I first attempted to take my exam in August of last year. Unfortunately, I did not prepare well and failed to pass the exam by just a few points. When I picked a date to retake the exam last semester, as we got closer to the date, I realized I had three exams back to back and a trip scheduled which made it impossible for me to take the exam. Now I am studying again and will be taking the exam next Wednesday. I am prepared.
Failure is essential in life. That is why I do not believe in participation trophies. They take away from failure and failure is what makes success so sweet. If you have never failed (which no one can say they have not) you will never appreciate success as much. I embrace failure. It makes you stronger in whatever aspect you failed in. This class has not changed my mind on failing and I doubt it will.

What's Next?

Old Market:
I interviewed some people that are in my main market, college students. I showed them my venture concept and they loved it. They agree with all my plans and cannot wait to see how it turns out.  I will be moving forward with my plans and asked them if I was missing something. Their response was to speed up my plan. They think that if I came up with this idea there is definitely someone else that has done the same and I should try to be the firsts.

New Market:
My new market did not go so well. I interviewed to retired friends of my dad and asked them what they thought of my venture concept. They thought it was a good idea, but they would not be interested in the product. You see they do not have a need for an alarm clock since they no longer need to wake up early for work. They said if they ever have to use one, they do not mind since it is such a rare occasion for them.

Venture Concept No. 1 (Wake Pad)

After the vibrations go off and you are awake you can then turn off the alarm through the application. I still have to work out my production costs, but I would estimate to sell this product for $50.

Venture concept:
There are no competitors in this market. The only thing I am competing with is the idea of alarm clocks. I need to show people that they do not work as well as we want them to and that there is a better way.

Reading Reflection No. 2

The book I decided to read was The Art of Social Media: Power Tips for Power Users, by Guy Kawasaki. The reason I chose this book is because I have never been good with social media. I use it every day but never really promote myself as much as other do. This book made me realize the importance of using these platforms. The general argument of the book is to emphasis the importance of being a presence in these online platforms. They are an incredible way of self-promotion. Craziest part is that is it all free.

This book enhanced my learning of ENT because it improved an aspect of myself that I never worked on. It showed me that to be an entrepreneur you need to be able to promote yourself because at the end of the day it is in you that investors are investing.

The exercise I would create would be for students to create a professional Instagram page for their product. Then on a weekly basis they must post a story and a picture promoting either their company, the product, or themselves.

I did not really have an “aha” moment. I had expectations before reading this book. The book had no surprises it was exactly what I expected nothing more

Growing Your Social Capital

I contacted John Greenstein who works for Phillips. They make alarm clocks and I decided to email him and ask them why they make alarm clocks if everyone just uses their phones. This is a valuable contact because I can learn how and why this company has chosen to not discontinue this product.

The second person that I contacted was Peter Lemkin who is a marketing associate for sports watches. He is someone that is in a similar market as me. I emailed him asking about their marketing strategies.

The third person is Strafano Dongo. He works for Duracell the battery company. This will be great asset to have for my product. Since my product t is electric, I would need a battery supplier. After my conversation, I realized that I would have to find a cheaper supplier than them.

This was a great experience as I learn to reach out to people and see what they have to say. I can learn a lot and there is no cost or risk involved.

My name is Gonzalo Borquez, I was born in Argentina and moved here when I was 7. I am a Junior in college studying business and pursuing a career in actuarial risk management. I see this business taking off. This will be my career and what I leave behind.

I am offering a completely new product that most do not even recognize. This product will help people wake up from their sleep in a peaceful way.

I am offering this to the majority of the population. Anyone going on a trip or a student needing to wake up for work. An average Joe waking up to go to work or an athlete waking up to begin training.
Customers will pay me money because I will inform them on their problems and provide them a
solution.

What sets me apart from others is my showmanship and how I present myself. Not only that but I like to solve problems and the harder the problem the better.

I think these questions fit together well as my skills and experience are what led to the creation of my product. I did not receive any negative feedback from my first submission so I just did this one exactly as my first.

Elevator Pitch 2

Customer Avatar

My customer avatar is a 20-30 year old who loves to sleep. He is not into politics and enjoys watching tv and movies in his bed. They like the outdoor on weekends and drive regular cars. This avatar is your classical working man or women or just a casual student. Big food guy. I relate to this guy or girl in the way that I love my sleep and do not like it when it is interrupted. I think this is a coincidence because I came up with this product because I like my sleep and I believe that the people that buy my product will like it too.

What is your secret sauce?

There are several things that set me apart from other. Although I do not believe we are all unique I think everyone is different in little way yet the same in most ways.
I guess that leads me to my first characteristic which would be that I like to look at the world for what it is and not dress it up. What I mean by that is that I do not interpret things for what they could be just take them as they are.
My sense of humor is sort of unique as in I find comedy in most serious situations whether it be the irony or just how exaggerated it become by others.
My physical features are unique as well. Although it is said that there are people out in the world that look similar to me, I have multiple scar on my body that I believe set me apart from others.
My cleverness sets me apart. Not everyone thinks the same way. I like to think I am above average in intelligence (mainly because the average population is very stupid).
Lastly, I love to cook and washing dishes which is something my previous roommates would always say was weird and weird usually means uniqueness.
From my interviews I got some interesting feedback. One person said my lack of emotions sets me apart. Another said my assertiveness. My mother said my kindness. My dad said my intelligence. Lastly my brother said my scars.
I was not able to include the voice notes due to technical difficulty but the summary should be enough.
It is funny that most of what others said about me was not on my list but that makes sense since we do not see ourselves the same way others see us. In a way we all want to think we are the smartest or funniest person we know but the reality is that the majority of us are not,

Figuring out Buyer Behavior pt.2

There is no real alternative to an alarm clock. That is what my product is, an alternative. When the people I interview were younger they had a physical alarm clocks that they could snooze. Now everyone just uses their phone alarm clock application. There is not much searching for people since every phone has the alarm clock in them. This assignment was not good for me since what I am trying to find is an alternative to something everyone uses and has already. The only choice people have is on the noise that the alarm will make. Some people choose a favorite song and other something soothing, the deep sleepers pick something loud, etc. This is not a purchase though.

Halfway Reflection

Something that I have never done before because I just never had the drive to keep up with is make a schedule and sticking to it. Every Sunday I make a weekly schedule outlining everything I need to get done for that week. This has been the key to me keeping up with the assignments in this class.

There has been many times that I wanted to give up on an assignment due to how much time it would take and I simply just did not want to do it. Even though I felt like this I finished my work. I finished because I knew my grade depended on it and if I started slacking my grade would suffer.

My there tips would be to start the assignment at least a week before the due date. This will give you ample amount of time to get all the components of the assignment done. Second tip is to make a schedule and stick to it. This will organize your week and allow you to complete all of these assignment as well as any other commitments you might have. The third is to have fun with the class. It is an interesting course and you should try to make the most of it.

Reading Reflection No. 1

The autobiography that I read was of Ray Kroc the person that turned McDonalds into the fast food giant that it is today. Kroc was an amazing business man who drive for success turned him into a legend but destroyed his personal life as well. The part that surprised me the most about his story is that it was not until he was 50 that he met the McDonald brothers and he began working with them. The part that I most admired is that he never gave up. He constantly looked for opportunities to do business and succeed in his career. To go from selling milkshake machines and plastic cups to owning the biggest fast food industry in the world is simply amazing. What I least admired is that this ruthless mentality led him to back stab his partners and ruin his marriage. He encountered multiple failures such as working for a bar that sold liquor illegally and selling bad real-estate but after that he went to sell milkshake makers and that led him to McDonalds.

Ray Kroc had a great mind for business. He saw opportunities where others did not. He noticed that drive throughs where becoming spots for young people to hang out in and this created and unfriendly environment for families. He also notices that the fast pace of the McDonald restaurants eliminated this problem and took the opportunity. He then turned the McDonald franchise into a real-estate business which created the foundation for this industry.

I did not find any part of the reading that was confusing. I did not understand how someone can care more about his business than his family but everyone has different priorities and one cannot judge from the outside.

If I could ask any two questions they would be as follows. The first would be how he lived with himself after he betrayed his partner. The people that gave him an opportunity to create what he did and then to just cut them out completely. The second thing would be after everything he accomplished and everything he lost. Was it worth it?

I think his opinion on hard work must be that it is for fools. To work smart not hard. Some people go their whole life’s working hard and never amount to anything. It is about working hard on the right opportunities and never for someone else’s benefit only your own. I guess I agree with this mentality it is a bit blunt but it is completely true.

Figuring Out Buyer Behavior

It was not hard to find three people to interview that had the unmet need. Everyone uses alarm clocks and a lot of those who use it do not like to wake up to them. Although they all have the unmet need two out of the three never thought about looking into a substitution. It is cray how comfortable people get with something just because everyone uses them even if it is a mediocre product. From my interviews I learned that they come in contact with their need in the morning as they wake up for class or for work. Only one of them had looked on the internet in hopes of finding a better method of waking up and they decided that there was no clear solution. They had tried the smart watch silent alarms but found them uncomfortable as well so they just stuck with the old fashion alarm clock

Idea Napkin 1

My name is Gonzalo Borquez. I was born in Argentina and moved to Miami at the age of seven. I have a strong mathematical background combined with great organizational skills. My aspiration like most is to run my own successful business. Except unlike most I have the determination to sacrifice everything to achieve my goal.

My product is a revolutionary alarm clock. It is one that does not startle you awake and is reliable enough for you to not have to worry about over sleeping. I have come up with a new method of waking up. It is a simple device that slides under your mattress and vibrates when indicated to wake you up. The equivalent to another person tapping you awake.

This product is for every working human being or any person that has the need to wake up at a specific time. This is a huge range of customers as the majority of civilians need to be waken up in order to get to school, work, or any sort of commitment they might have.

I believe this is needed for every person that cannot stand being waken up by a loud and obnoxious alarm clock. People do not like it, I know I don not. This way if you have roommates they will not be woken up by your alarm and vice versa. If you are a heavy sleeper there are setting you can adjust to change the strength of the vibration.

Everyone has settle for the mediocre alarm clock but I have not. This is what sets me apart. I am the first to come up with this solution and therefore have an advantage on the market. An alarm is so widely used that no one thought of it broken or needed fixing since everyone else used it. I am braking those boundaries and changing the way we wake up.

I think these questions do fit together. The part that sets me apart I believe to be my strongest quality since no one else is thinking of this. My weakest I would have to say is the specifics of my product. I do not know how exactly it would work since I am not an engineer but the idea is a simple one. This does not worry me so much though.

Elevator Pitch 1

Testing the Hypothesis Part 2

This assignment was harder than I thought it would be. Finding several people that were outside the boundaries of my opportunity was very difficult. As you know almost everyone at this school uses alarm clocks. Most of the people I interviewed were adults that had either retired or just did not work.

The who. Like I said before these people that fall outside the boundaries are not your average civilian. They are those that have finished contributing to society and those who lack the ability to. I am talking about people without jobs and some without any responsibility. I am not saying that only those who use alarm clocks have a responsibility just that they have at least the responsibility of having to be somewhere at a certain time. I mostly interviewed elderly people those who have retired. In my conversations with them, every single one of them had used an alarm clock before. Now they say they do not use them simply because they do not have too. Also, most of them go to bed early and therefore wake up early. One said that he takes his hearing aid off to go to sleep so he wouldn't even hear an alarm if it went off (I found this man very amusing).

The what. It took me some time to get good feedback from this one but after a lot of brainstorming, I found an answer. I realized that my need was not to wake up in the morning it was more of the way someone wakes up. Alarms can be harmful to the heart and create stress for our bodies and minds. That is the true what. It isn't the alarms, it is the noise they produce and how they startle you awake.

The why. The why for the outsider is simply that they do not have the need to wake up at a certain time. The need is simply not there like it is for your average working individual.

Inside the Boundary
Outside the Boundary
Those with the need to wake up at certain times
Those who have no commitment to time
A better way to wake up
Needing to wake up early
Because alarm clocks are not good
Because it works for some people

Solving the Problem

My problem is a tough one since it is alarm clocks. There are too many variables and I have not come up with a full prove solution. If I had I would be rich. One thing I was thinking is a device that goes underneath your mattress and it sends a vibration at a specific time to wake you up. It would be the equivalent to someone lightly touching you to wake you. For people that are heavy sleepers, the vibrations would be stronger. It can be used with Bluetooth and you can set multiple alarms and control the strength of the vibration.

Testing the Hypothesis Part 1

The opportunity that I want to expand upon is the same one I have talked about before and that is how alarm clocks disrupt your sleep in a startling way.

The Who: Everyone who needs to wake up at a specific time
The What: Alarm clocks
The Why: There has not been a better way to wake someone up yet

Testing the who: Not everyone needs to wake up at a specific time and some do not mind alarm clocks.
Testing the what: Alarm clocks
Testing the why: in an article by "ABC news" explains how alarm clocks are bad for your heart. Increasing blood pressure and heart rate, as well as stress by giving you an adrenaline rush.

Interview #1:
The first person I spoke with was very supportive of this opportunity. In fact, it was not very helpful since he didn't challenge anything I said. He hates alarm clocks just as much as I do and was not surprised to learn that they are bad for your heart since they startle you awake.

Interview #2:
This person was a great help. She does not like alarm clocks but knows they are necessary since she is a deep sleeper. She thinks nothing else would wake her so even if there was a way to wake up without noise, she would not use it. This causes me to think that not everyone would be willing to try a new method of waking up in the morning.

Interview #3:
I was very shocked to hear that my third interviewee has been waking up to natural light every day. He has been doing this for a long time and said it took some time to get used to. He likes it because it wakes him up extremely early and it allows him to make the most of his day. I might have to try this.

Interview #4:
This person has been using a silent alarm for a while now. He bought an apple watch a year ago and does not mind sleeping with it, so he uses its vibrating alarm to wake up. I have tried this, but it is very uncomfortable. Although this solves the what it does not do it for everyone.

Interview#5:
My last interview took an interesting turn. Since she did not like alarm clocks, she changed the alarm to a song. The song starts with a mellow tone and then picks up enough to wake her up. This could be the solution for the abrupt part of the problem. The only challenge would be for people that are heavy sleepers and do not wake up so easily.

Identifying Local Opportunities

Parent, could your teens be 'Julling'?

https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529/year%3A2019%212019/mody%3A0125%21January%2B25&f=advanced&action=browse&format=text&docref=news/1712DC386D0E0308

The article begins my stating multiple facts such as the increase in the amount of e-cigarette uses and that one in five high schoolers have vaped in the past month. Studies are being done to determine if these corporation are in fact targeting teens. The mango flavor pods have been removed from stores to comply with regulations. Toward the end of the article it informs parents on what they should do to prevent their teens from smoking and if they are how to help them stop.

The problem presented in the story is the rise in nicotine addiction in teens. Vaping has become 'cool' so it is what people will do to fit in. There is an opportunity here for someone to discover a way to help either quite this habit or make it known just how damaging it is to smoke nicotine. This is the modern cigarette and the next 'jule' is on its way.

It is mostly high schoolers and millennials that have this problem. Mainly because it is in style to smoke these things. It has also become a problem for parents as their underage kids are consuming these products.

"Drugs - selling, holding, prescribing - cost these medical professionals their licenses"

https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529&sort=YMD_date%3AD&fld-base-0=alltext&maxresults=20&val-base-0=problem&docref=news/171287D8A9B9EA50

The article talks about a couple of doctors that got caught selling and prescribing drugs to civilians that used them for recreational purposes. The DEA caught them and it has become a rising problem and that the Florida Department of Health has had to remove licenses because of it.

The problem here is the influence these pharmaceutical companies have over doctors. They push for doctors to prescribe these pills and it gets some people addicted to them. Then to make extra cash these doctors or nurses can sell these pills themselves because the pharmaceutical companies will practically pay them to do so.

The people that suffer from these problems are those who have addictive personalities and have been prescribe highly addictive drugs. It is also a problem for the DEA since their job is to prevent the illegal selling of drugs.

"Even out at sea, the air on cruise ships may be dirtier than you think, study shows"

https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529&sort=YMD_date%3AD&fld-base-0=alltext&maxresults=20&val-base-0=problem&docref=news/17127C11875A33C0

An associate professor at John Hopkins did a study on the air quality in a carnival cruise ship and found that the air particles where similar to those of Beijing, China. People think that because they are out in the middle of the sea that the wind disperses these toxins but even though that might be slightly true, people are still exposed to these fumes. Carnival denied the claims and called them ridiculous. These particles are so small that they can enter the blood stream and even the brain. It poses a very serious concern for those who travel on cruise ships.

The problem here is that cruise ships are not as eco-friendly as people might think. This is a big issue because there are hundreds of cruise ships travel the world constantly. They build bigger ones every year. If they are not monitored or they don’t start using more ecofriendly engines this can cause a huge problem for the environment in the future.

Everyone on earth is affected by this problem but the people affected most are those who take cruises frequently.

"Shop for electricity? Florida voters could decide in 2020."

https://infoweb-newsbank-com.lp.hscl.ufl.edu/apps/news/document-view?p=WORLDNEWS&t=pubname%3AMIHB%21Miami%2BHerald%252C%2BThe%2B%2528FL%2529&sort=YMD_date%3AD&fld-base-0=alltext&maxresults=20&val-base-0=problem&docref=news/171287D88C785E18

A group called Citizens for Energy Choices has developed a petition to have Florida supreme court decide on whether or not to allow the increase of competition in Florida energy market. The petition does not ask for there to deregulate the market but to allow for competitors to join it. Big energy companies claim that deregulating the market will cause harm to the consumer since that’s what the past has shown in other state, but this is not the intention of the citizens.

There is a problem when it comes to choosing an electricity provider as there is not choice at all. GRU for example charges an absurd amount for electricity bills and there is nothing the consumer can do since it is either pay them or not have any power in your home.

The article talks about how the rising sea levels will not just affect the beach front properties but all of Florida. There has already been reports of septic tanks overflooding in people back yards as west as Kendall. If this trend continues all of Florida home owners can expect to have their properties ruined even worse lose their homes.

The problem here is the rising sea-level. Due to global warming the ice caps are melting causing the seas to rise. If this continues it can be possible that all of Florida will be under water. To be exact any cities near water can disappear. It is up to use to speak with our representatives and people in power so that we can resolve this issue.

The whole world is affected by this problem as if cities are lost then everyone will be affected.
